What is an animal sacrifice in Islam?

Animal sacrifice is a timeless form of charity in Islam that feeds the poor, strengthens community bonds, and expresses devotion to Allah.

The Qur’an instructs believers about sacrifice:

“So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].”

(Surah Al-Kawthar 108:2

فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ).

There are different contexts in which an animal may be sacrificed:

  • Qurbānī / Udḥiyah (أضحية) — the ritual sacrifice at Eid al-Adha.

  • ʿAqīqah (عقيقة) — the sacrifice performed for a newborn.

  • Nadhr (نذر) — a vow sacrifice offered when someone makes a pledge to Allah and fulfills it.

  • Sadaqah Sacrifice / Charity Sacrifice — given any time as an act of charity to feed those in need.

  • Fulfilling vows & thanksgiving: It’s a meaningful way to thank Allah or fulfill a personal vow.

  • Community care: Distributing meat strengthens community ties and ensures vulnerable households receive nutritious food.

Whether it’s a vow (Nadhr), a gift of charity (Sadaqah), or an Eid Qurbani, your intention is what matters most. If you have specific religious requirements for the sacrifice (e.g., who may eat the meat, dedication rules), please tell us in the donation notes and we will follow that intention.

How we do it - our process

We follow a simple, respectful process so donors and beneficiaries alike are treated with dignity:

  1. Sourcing & standards

    • We procure healthy animals that meet Islamic guidelines for sacrifice.

    • Animals are handled humanely and slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law.

  2. Where we work

    • We identify communities with the greatest need: refugees, low-income families, displaced households, or areas affected by crisis. Our local teams and trusted partners verify need on the ground.

  3. Sacrifice & distribution

    • The animal is sacrificed with proper intention (niyyah).

    • Meat is portioned and distributed quickly and fairly to families in need, local shelters, and community kitchens.

  4. Transparency & proof

    • After the distribution, we record a personal video showing the process (sign text, date, location, respectful scenes of distribution.

    • Beneficiaries record a short prayer or message of thanks for the donor.

    • Donors receive the video and confirmation so you see where your gift went and how it helped.

What you’ll receive as a sponsor

  • A personal video documenting the sacrifice and distribution for transparency.

  • A short message or prayer recorded by beneficiaries thanking and praying for the donor.

  • A written summary (date, location, number of families served).

  • Option to have the sacrifice dedicated in a name you provide, or to remain anonymous.
