New Police Hijab Designed to Protect Muslim Women on Duty

ree

A new “quick-release” hijab designed for female Muslim police officers has entered production, offering improved safety while on duty.

Developed through a collaboration between De Montfort University and Leicestershire Police, the hijab uses a magnetic attachment that allows the lower section to detach instantly if pulled, reducing the risk of injury during confrontations while maintaining modesty.

The design, known as the Blue Light Hijab, took three years of research and testing with female officers. It is now being introduced as part of standard personal protective equipment.

Student officer PC Seher Nas, one of the first to wear the hijab, said it has made her feel safer and more confident at work. She explained that unlike traditional hijabs, the new design removes the fear of strangulation while remaining easy to wear and professional.

Police leaders say the initiative supports inclusion and may encourage more Muslim women to consider careers in policing. Interest in the design has also come from NHS trusts, paramedics, and private organisations.
