Rare Islamic Artefacts Go on Display at North Lincolnshire Museum

ree

A remarkable collection of sacred Islamic artefacts is now on display at the North Lincolnshire Museum in Scunthorpe, offering visitors a unique glimpse into centuries-old history and tradition.

Many of these items were previously accessible only to pilgrims who had journeyed to Mecca, making this exhibition an extraordinary opportunity for people of all backgrounds to experience a piece of Islamic heritage.

Highlights of the display include:

  • A key to the resting place of the Prophet Muhammad,

  • A rare Kiswa cloth, the richly embroidered covering of the Kaaba, the sacred stone structure at the heart of the Great Mosque in Mecca.

The exhibition is being organised by the Kiswa Arts and Culture Gallery in partnership with the North Lincolnshire Multi-Faith Partnership, with support from North Lincolnshire Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Abid Khan, from the Multi-Faith Partnership, emphasised the significance of the artefacts’ craftsmanship. Many are intricately embroidered with 22-carat gold thread, reflecting centuries of skilled artistry.

“Visiting Mecca is a lifetime journey,” Khan explained. “There, you experience millions of people, the hustle and bustle. Here, being able to see and touch these artefacts brings back all those memories.”

The museum encourages visitors of all faiths to explore the exhibition a chance to connect over history, beauty, and craftsmanship.
